Each year the 3rd-5th grade participate in selecting the State Bluebonnet Award book. A bluebonnet committee, made up of librarians from each of the ten librarian districts, selects twenty books as the best books in the state for the year. They then ask students across the state to read or have read to them at least five of the books (At VES we encourage students to read or have read to them as many of the books as possible) on the list and vote for their favorite. The book selected by thousands of Texas students is awarded the Texas Bluebonnet Book for the year. This year's list consists of mysteries, fantasies, adventures, graphic non-fiction, zombies, biographies, fairy tales, spies, and bug faces. Since all of the elementary books are packed away, awaiting our new library, the bluebonnet books are available at the Venus Community Library, part of the high school library. The Community Hours are Monday-Friday 3:30Pm-6:00PM and Saturday, 9AM-5:00PM. We will present the bluebonnet books for the year in January, but will probably not be able to join in the voting.
